Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) To Submit Report To Lok Sabha on January 7

NEW DELHI/GUWAHATI: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) will submit its report on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 to the Parliament on January 7. The JPC finalized the report at its meeting on Thursday amidst protest.

“We will submit the report to the Parliament on January 7,” said Joint Parliamentary Committee chairman Rajendra Agrawal.

“As the Lok Sabha Speaker gave us the task, we will submit the report in the Lok Sabha,” said Agrawal.

The JPC chairman said that the members in the House can discuss the amended report. He said that there were oppositions to the final amended report. “While some members voted against the Bill, some voted in support. But it was a unanimous decision,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Congress MP from Assam Bhubaneswar Kalita walked out of the JPC meeting in protest. The MP had to take such a step as the JPC was bent on submitting its report on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to the Parliament without bringing any amendment based on Opposition members’ suggestions.

Addressing the media after staging walkout, MP Kalita said: “The JPC rejected all suggestions of the Opposition members. It was not even ready to hold any discussion on the Bill at today’s meeting. That prompted me to stage walkout.”

In the last JPC meeting held in New Delhi, all suggestions and objections submitted by the Opposition members of the JPC were rejected outright through voting.
