GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court on Thursday announced that senior-most judge of the HC, Justice Lanusungkum Jamir, has assumed charge as Chief Justice (Acting) of the Gauhati HC (High Court of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh with effect from today.

The appointment of Justice Lanusungkum Jamir as acting Chief Justice of Gauhati HC was necessitated by the elevation of Justice Sandeep Mehta as judge of the Supreme Court.

The appointment was made vide a notification dated November 9, from the Government of India (GOI) issued by the Special Secretary to the GOI, Ministry of Law & Justice, Department of Justice (Appointments Division).

"In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Lanusungkum Jamir, Judge of the Gauhati High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from the date Shri Justice Sandeep Mehta relinquishes the charge as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court consequent upon his appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India," said a notification issued by the Centre.

Through another notification, N. Unni Krishnan Nair was appointed as additional judge of Gauhati HC.
