GUWAHATI: The Kamakhya Devalaya Committee has decided to give the Ambubachi Mela a miss this year by only observing the rituals with very few people. Such an unprecedented decision has to be taken by the Devalaya Committee in view of the outbreak of COVID-19, and the guidelines issued in that connection.

Talking to The Sentinel, Kamakhya Devalaya Committee secretary Bhupesh Sarma said, “Not holding the Ambubachi Mela is a big loss of revenue that comes from religious tourism or pilgrimage to the State. The residents of Nilachal Hill also suffer a huge loss as they earn revenue by renting their rooms during the mela. Since many people throng the mela from West Bengal and other States that are now affected by the corona outbreak, we’ve decided not to hold the mela this year. We’ll, however, observe the ritual with very few people. The main door of the Devalaya will be closed from June 22-26, 2020.”
