GUWAHATI: The double gauge railway track from Kamakhya railway station to New Guwahati railway station often falls short of handling the increasing freight and passenger train traffic. Many trains travelling in ‘Up’ and ‘Down’ directions cannot enter the Guwahati railway station on time due to congestion. To solve this problem, a project for quadrupling the railway track was included in the 2017–18 budget.

The anticipated cost of this project was Rs 6,124 crore. Under this project, two additional lines were supposed to be laid from Kamakhya railway station to New Guwahati railway station for 10.30 km. However, sources said that the railway track quadrupling project was dropped after several meetings were held to discuss the options for quadrupling, site constraints, and methodology for the execution of works under running traffic. Due to site constraints in the congested Guwahati city area and the requirement for blocking of existing tracks, the proposal for track quadrupling was dropped.

Sources further said that instead of this project, the railway authorities are now planning to study two separate by-pass lines to Guwahati from the north side as well as the south side to ease congestion in Guwahati. The proposal has been agreed upon, and the Final Location Survey (FLS) of two separate by-pass lines to Guwahati will be carried out.
