GUWAHATI: Compared to 25 other districts of the country that have been under a survey, the Kamrup district of Assam has fared very badly in the standard of primary education. According to the survey report, in Kamrup district only 45.8 percent of the children of standard I, II and III can recognize numbers (11-99) as against 72.2 percent of children on an average in the 26 districts of the nation that came under the survey.

This is what ASER 2019 (Annual Status of Education Report-ASER 2019 Early Years) report says. The report was published in New Delhi recently.

According to the report, across grades, the children in Kamrup have been found to be the worst performers in the all-district average in the survey that selected 1,212 children in 60 villages in the district.

According to the survey report, in Kamrup, 63 per cent of the children in age 4 are enrolled in Anganwadis compared to an all-district average of 44.2 per cent. “There is a major increase in the enrolment in private institutions with age. Enrolment in private LKG/UKG increases from 20 per cent in the age 4 to 42.2 per cent in age 5. This is against all-district average of 36.7% for age 4 children and 40.6 per cent for age 5 children,” the report said.

The survey report further says that in Kamrup district, 53.4 per cent of children enrolled in standard I are of age 7 and 8 and 16.1 per cent of the children are of the age 4 and 5. This shows that a major chunk of children in Standard I in Kamrup are not of the appropriate age.

Every year since 2005, ASER has been reporting on the schooling status and the ability to do basic reading and arithmetic tasks for children in the 5-16 age group in rural India.
