BOKAJAN: Karbi Anglong police seized over 8 kg of smuggled gold on the NH-36 near Dillai Tiniali on Saturday.
The police recovered the gold from a Hyundai car (AS 01EV 2350) bound for Guwahati from Manipur.
Dillai Police intercepted the SUV for a routine check, and on verifying the documents, a home guard identified as Maising Tokbi doubted the driver's conduct. Cross-checking the car, the home guard recovered four packets wrapped with tarpaulin containing 49 gold bars. The market value of the gold is around Rs 4 crore.
The smugglers offered Home Guard Maising Tokbi a bribe which he refused. He immediately reported the matter to his senior officer.
The smugglers kept the gold bars concealed near the engine of the vehicle. Police arrested two persons — Prakash Basnet (32) and Subhash Bista (24) — hailing from Manipur.
A preliminary investigation has revealed that the gold bars were for delivery in Guwahati.
The police seized the gold bars and sealed them in front of independent witnesses under the physical supervision of John Das, APS, SDPO Bokajan, assisted by OC Bokajan Mwblik Brahma and staff.
