GUWAHATI: Aimed at aiding anti-poaching activities and improving communication between camps and the headquarters, the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) and Tiger Reserve would soon be equipped with 10 satellite phones.
Sharing this information, P Sivakumar, KNP Director, told The Sentinel that there are several camps particularly in the groves and the riverine areas of the Brahmaputra where the patrol teams often face wireless and signal disruptions. "Most of these camps have network and communication issues. They are unable to communicate properly with the headquarters. This makes it difficult for forest teams to deliver their duties properly. I am hopeful that we will soon get 10 satellite phones and this would help the forest teams do their jobs better".
The Director further said that 10 camps where these satellite phones are required, have already been identified and the list has been sent to the Forest and Environment Department. The issue was discussed at the meeting with Chief Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma recently. As the Chief Minister has laid stress on the overall protection of the KNP, the official decision to provide satellite phones to the KNP was taken at the meeting.
The Forest and Environment Department is examining the proposal that will be sent to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). It is the ASDMA that will provide the satellite phones.
