Lachit is a braveheart of the nation, not just Assam, says Home Minister Amit Shah

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Lachit Barphukan is not only a braveheart of Assam but of the whole country, and the entire people should know about the great Ahom general.

Shah said this while releasing books on Lachit Barphukan translated into 23 languages from the English language 'Assam Braveheart Lachit Barphukan' authored by Arup Kumar Dutta. The book release function was held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra here today.

The book 'Assam Braveheart Lachit Barphukan' has been translated into Marathi, Bengali, Rajasthani, Sanskrit, Urdu, Punjabi, Nepali, Kashmiri, Bodo, Gujarati, Manipuri, Hindi, and others, for a total of 23 languages.

Shah said, "We have lots to learn from the life of Lachit Barphukan. He was a multi-faceted warrior and an able leader. The people of the country should know that this general from the northeast successfully repelled the Mughal invading army and prevented them from gaining any territory in this part of the country. If he had not been able to defend Assam from the Mughals, the state may not have remained a part of the country."

He further said, "A section of historians wrote along the views of the British, and many great warriors did not find mention in their history books. So, the new generation does not know anything about them. We now have to highlight before the youth the history of such neglected warriors. They also have to be informed about our ancient culture and tradition."

"The Congress created various issues and prevented the Northeast from becoming one. But, since our government came to power, such issues have taken the backseat. The Northeast will prosper only if the people remain united. There are many languages in the country. We should consider this to be our strength rather than a weakness. All languages and literature have to be honoured so that our country becomes stronger," Amit Shah added.

Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "After the Lok Sabha elections, we will get the book translated and published in the remaining scheduled languages, and a release function will be held in every state concerned. The idea for translating the book into different languages was given by Amit Shah last year. The story of Lachit Barphukan is not included in Indian history. That we have been unable to take a great general like Lachit Barphukan to the entire world is a big discredit for us. Now we are taking all steps to make him known as a great historical figure around the world. A huge statue of Lachit is being constructed in Jorhat district, and it will be inaugurated by the prime minister in February."
