GUWAHATI: State Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh today said that Assam Police personnel must maintain the sanctity of police stations and ensure that police stations remain the safest place for children and women.

The DGP made this statement in relation to the incident at Ghograpar Police Station. A 17-year-old girl filed a case (287/2023) in Nalbari Police Station, alleging that an SI of Ghograpar Police Station had assaulted her sexually and taken some obscene photographs, besides making advances. The DGP has decided to dismiss Inspector Biman Roy (UB), the suspended Ghograpar Police Station OC, from the Assam Police in connection with the case.

In a statement on social media, the DGP said, “The incident is the rarest of the rare, and as the Director General of Police and Head of Police Force of Assam, and in accordance with extant law and rules, I have decided to dismiss Inspector (UB) Biman Roy from Assam Police.”

The DGP further said that the decision will also send a strong message to all serving police personnel about adherence to the law of the land and the thought process of the Chief Minister of Assam about the shape Assam Police should take to serve the people of the State.

“Today, I am deeply disheartened and anguished at the turn of events. One Inspector has let us all down; the entire police family stands distraught. I assure the people of Assam that the power vested in me as the Director General of Police shall be used to the maximum to ensure that the glory of Assam Police remains intact,” the DGP said.

The DGP further said this might also be taken as a warning and advice to all Assam Police personnel to maintain the sanctity of police stations and ensure that police stations remain the safest place for children and women. “Anyone not discharging the duty to keep the citizens safe in police stations, especially the women and children, shall invariably face similar consequences. I assure the people of Assam that the Assam Police shall continue to discharge its duties to the best of its capabilities in the interest of the state and for service to the people of Assam,” he added.
