GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Wednesday that Assam is headed towards becoming a ‘crime-free state’ and that major crimes in the state are displaying a ‘decreasing trend.’
The Chief Minister stated this in a post in ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), which said, “Our commitment to make Assam a crime-free state is moving positively in the right direction. Sharing an update on the decreasing trend of all major kinds of crimes recorded in the state He also attached a table showing the figures on crimes like murder, rape, and dacoity in the state since 2019.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma attributed the dip in major crimes to pro-active measures adopted by his government. Measures like active police patrolling, increased efficiency in crime management, the use of forensics, greater people-police coordination, and firm support from the Government of Assam were cited as major contributors to the decrease in crimes.
According to CM Sarma’s post, data on major crimes since 2019 revealed that—in the year 2019, there were 1235 murders, 1952 rapes, and 198 incidents of dacoity. The figures for 2020 stood at 1131 murders, 1736 rapes, and 198 dacoities. In 2021, there were 1192 murders, 1922 rapes, and 188 dacoities. The figures showed a slight decrease in 2022, with 1084 muders, 1113 rapes, and 85 incidents of dacoity. Till August 2023, 686 murders, 656 rapes, and 55 dacoities have been recorded.
