GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today appealed to the women of the Muslim community to make their children doctors, engineers and teachers so that they can be free from the influence of maulanas and clerics.

He said this in reference to the recent controversial comment made by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal. The AIUDF chief had reportedly advised Hindus to marry young to give birth to more children like Muslims. Ajmal drew flak from several quarters following which he later apologized for his remark.

Chief Minister Sarma today said that for vote-bank politics, Ajmal wanted Muslim women to give birth to more children. "Muslims may not vote for me but I want their children to become doctors, engineers and teachers so that they can be free from the influence of maulanas like Ajmal. I want the community to progress. I appeal to the women of the Muslim community to make their children educated so that the community can develop socially and economically," said the Chief Minister.

While responding to the demand made by various organizations to arrest Ajmal for his remark, Sarma said, "We all are under the law of the land. If any action needs to be taken, it will be taken as per law."

Earlier, the Chief Minister visited the site of the madrassa at Kabaitari in the Bongaigaon district which was demolished recently for Al-Qaeda links. Sarma interacted with the local people. He said that the madrassa was demolished in the interest of the nation's security. "There is no place for jihadis in Assam," he said.

The Chief Minister, however, added that as the local people had no jihadi links, the government had decided to construct a model school there for the educational development of the area. Responding to the local people's opposition to the construction of a model school, the Chief Minister said, "The people must be made aware of the terror activities of such outfits and then they will themselves shun these terror outfits."
