GUWAHATI: "Many of the COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment in GMCH are having respiratory issues," said Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of GMCH (Gauhati Medical College & Hospital) Prof. (Dr) Achyut Chandra Baishya.
Speaking to The Sentinel here on Tuesday, Dr Baishya elaborated, "As of now, GMCH is treating only the symptomatic corona patients. On the other hand, the asymptomatic COVID-19 patients are referred to the COVID Care Centres. However, these centres do refer their serious asymptomatic corona patients to the GMCH."
Dwelling on the procedure followed, he said, "According to government guidelines, after a person is diagnosed as COVID-19 positive, he or she can be referred either to a hospital or a COVID Care Centre. A second test is carried out on the eighth or ninth day following the patient's admission into the respective health institute.
"If this result is negative, then the person concerned is discharged on the 10th day with instructions to go for 14 days home quarantine.
"However, if the second test result indicates a positive case then the admitted patient has to go for a third test after a few days interval.
"A patient is released only if the result indicates a COVID-negative case."
Dr Baishya added, "While the critical corona patients are being treated in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs), some are in the 'Oxygen Ward' as they have respiratory problems.
Till Tuesday morning, GMCH had 580 COVID-19 symptomatic patients.
