GUWAHATI: Getting two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine may not be the best way to protect against the infectious disease. Many people in Assam have been infected by the virus even after receiving twin doses of the vaccines.

"Even though the symptoms might not be that complex, several fully vaccinated people have been infected with the coronavirus. In most cases, it is through the variant strain, and not the original one. However, those infected after vaccination are showing slightly different symptoms from the one noticed at the beginning of the pandemic," a doctor associated with the Covid-19 treatment at the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital said.

The doctor said one of the prime reasons for such cases of infection is the casual and complacent behaviour of the people after they complete receiving the first and second doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. The vaccinated people start believing that they would not be infected and start ignoring the Covid-safety behaviour and protocols, he said.

"Vaccination is just one of the steps to save people from getting infected with coronavirus. Even after vaccination the people should wear a mask all the time whenever they are outdoors. Washing hands regularly and maintain proper hygiene are imperative. Staying alert and exercising caution is not optional but are the only ways to break the chain and reduce the risk of infection," the doctor said.

Another doctor at the GMCH said the people who are fully vaccinated against the Covid-19 are relatively protected against severe infection, hospitalization and death caused by the virus. But coronavirus cases among the fully vaccinated — so-called "breakthrough" Covid cases — are increasingly being seen among those who have had both doses of the vaccines.
