GUWAHATI: The medical colleges in Assam have 1,200 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats now.

With NMC's (National Medical Commission) recent approval to the Dhubri Medical College as the ninth medical college of the state under Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, the number of MBBS seats in the state rose to 1,200 from 1,100 earlier. The NMC approved 100 MBBS seats for the Dhubri Medical College.

Assam has 200 MBBS seats each in GMCH (Gauhati Medical College & Hospital) and AMC (Assam Medical College), 125 seats each in SMC (Silchar Medical College), Jorhat Medical College, Tezpur Medical College and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College in Barpeta. Diphu Medical College and Lakhimpur Medical College have 100 MBBS seats each.

Lakhimpur Medical College got NMC approval last year. MBBS classes are going on in the medical institute.

Talking to The Sentinel, Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said, "We have more medical colleges in the pipelines. In the next academic year, we will try to get NMC approval for Nalbari Medical College and Kokrajhar Medical College. The construction of both the medical colleges is nearing completion."

Meanwhile, the Dhubri Medical College will start classes from this academic session. The OPD (Outdoor Patients Department) service of the college has been going on.
