Meghalaya still tense; CM Conrad K Sangma meets NHRC chief

GUWAHATI: The situation in Meghalaya following the Mukroh incident remained tense on Friday, but no major breach of peace was reported barring a few isolated incidents of stone pelting. However, Internet services in the state will remain suspended at least till 4 pm on Saturday. On the other hand, the Assam Police is still not allowing private vehicles of Assam to enter Meghalaya.

Meanwhile, Megha-laya's Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong met the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Arun Kumar Mishra, and briefed him about the situation prevailing in their state.

Talking to The Sentinel, Meghalaya's Director General of Police (DGP) LR Bishnoi said that no major untoward incident was reported from across the state on Friday, although tension prevailed. He informed that additional forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, adding that the government will review as to whether Internet services in the state could be restored after 4 pm tomorrow.

It is pertinent to mention all government offices, markets and shops remained closed in Shillong on Friday due to a 'non-cooperation' programme announced by certain organizations. During the meeting with the NHRC Chairperson, Chief Minister Sangma said that the Mukroh incident was a clear violation of human rights and sought the Commission's support for necessary action. He also stressed the need for proper sensitization of forces deployed in the sensitive border areas so that such incidents, where precious lives are lost, do not recur in any part of the country.

He also appealed to the people of Meghalaya not to resort to panic purchases as the state has adequate stocks of fuel and essential commodities.
