Guwahati: The flood situation in the State continued to remain grim as 14 more people perished in the deluge in the last 24 hours.
The overall death toll due to floods and landslides has now risen to 173 during this year. Of the deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the highest number of six deaths occurred in the Cachar district, followed by three in Nagaon, two in Barpeta and one each in Karimganj, Kokrajhar and Lakhimpur.
The river Brahmaputra is still flowing over the danger level at Dhubri, Tezpur and Neematighat, while the Kopili is flowing over the danger level at Dharamtul, the Dichang at Nanglamuraghat and the Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang).
As on date, 30 districts continue to remain affected by floods. As many as 29,70,405 people of 2,450 villages remain affected by floods. A total of 3,03,484 inmates are taking shelter in 563 relief camps across the State.
Meanwhile, some members of the inter-ministerial Central team from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday visited the Panchgram town relief camp, Thanderpar relief camp and other flood-affected areas under the Algapur Revenue Circle in the Hailakandi district. The team also visited the flood-affected areas of Lama Bahadurpur and Nilambazar Revenue circle in the Karimganj district as a part of their scheduled field visit to Assam for damage assessment of recent flood.
A second group of the team visited embankment-breach areas and damages in Mora Kalang, 2 No Gunamara, Padum Pukhuri, Dahuti Padum Pukhuri and Domal in the Morigaon district. In the Kamrup district, the team visited the breach points in the Kayan Revenue Circle for damage assessment. The team discussed the situation with the district administration and assured of quick response to restore the damage.
Both the teams will return to Guwahati tomorrow after visiting the rest of the flood-affected districts as per schedule and will exchange views with Assam's Chief Secretary at a wrap-up meeting at the Assam Secretariat.
The team had arrived here yesterday.
