GUWAHATI: WWF-India (World Wide Fund for Nature-India), in association with the Samagra Shiksha Assam, has launched ‘Mission Prakriti’ so as to bring about awareness of Mother Nature among students. Assam is the second state to have signed for ‘Mission Prakriti’ after Tamil Nadu.

‘Mission Prakriti is a student-led environmental education programme and a movement led by the children of Assam for greening their schools and communities. The five themes of Mission Prakriti are biodiversity, water, waste, food, and energy. The Mission Prakriti handbook guides on how to form a Green Cabinet of students who will spearhead the activities and projects under the guidance of their teachers.

Advisor Education Department Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta launched Mission Prakriti-Assam and announced the Chief Minister’s Awards for green schools and students.

SSA Executive Director Sanjoy Dutta and WWF-India’s Chief Operating Officer Karan Bhalla signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SSA and WWF-India on the mission today at the State Mission Office, Kahilipara, Guwahati, for the implementation of the programme across 3,219 ICT (information and communication technology) schools in the state. The state has around 45,000 schools.

Karan Bhalla, Chief Operating Officer, WWF-India, said, “The collaborative initiative will enhance and enrich the knowledge, skills, and awareness of the state’s biodiversity among the student and teacher communities.” WWF India has been a pioneer in environmental education in the country, and Mission Prakriti is a unique collaboration between the environmentally proactive Assam Government and WWF-India”.

The school registration for the CM’s awards for Mission Prakriti is open until September 30, 2023.
