GUWAHATI: Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice Sandeep Mehta appreciated the efforts of Assam Police in nabbing the drug traffickers but said that common mistakes committed by the Investigating Officers (IOs) while investigating the NDPS Act cases let the accused get benefits during trial.

The Chief Justice said this at a workshop on ‘Investigation of Drug Trafficking Cases" organized by the State CID Assam in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). Based on his experience, he gave details as to how accused go scot-free by taking advantage of the common mistake made by investigation officers while investigating cases under the NDPS Act.

DGP GP Singh spoke about the tough actions being taken by Assam Police to curb the drug menace and make Assam drug-free.

In the past two years, Assam Police have seized drugs worth about Rs 1,500 crore, leading to the arrest of around 9,300 people and the registration of 5,580 cases.

The Addl. DGP (CID) welcomed the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court and gave a report on the proceedings of the workshop along with a presentation on the achievements of the Assam Police in nabbing the drug traffickers in the last two years.

A total of 85 police officers, ranging from SIs to DSPs, attended the workshop. The workshop discussed issues like search, seizure, arrests, disposal, drug samplings, financial investigations, asset freezing, etc.
