KOKRAJHAR: It will be a straight fight between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mitrajoot and the Congress-led Mahajoot in most of the constituencies in BTR (Bodoland Territorial Region) where election will be held in the third phase on April 6.

Since the Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) have come under the Mahajoot and the BJP, United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) under the NDA, there is no other major contesting party left in the remaining eight constituencies of BTC area. While the Mahajoot has left all the 12 seats in the BTR to the BPF, the BJP-led alliance has also left most of the seats to the UPPL. The straight fight is imminent in 28-Gossaigaon, 29-Kokrajhar West, 30-Kokrajhar East and 31-Sidli constituency between the BPF and the UPPL.

In 28-Gossaigaon, direct fight is on the cards between BPF candidate and MLA Majen Narzary and UPPL candidate Somnath Narzary, who was former All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) treasurer. In 29-Kokrajhar West, the electoral fight is between BPF candidate and MLA Rabiram Narzary and UPPL candidate Manaranjan Brahma, one of the richest candidates in this year's Assembly election. Similarly, contest will take place between Minister Pramila Rani Brahma of the BPF and Lawrence Islary of the UPPL, who is former ABSU general secretary, in 30-Kokrajhar East.

Meanwhile, strong contest is imminent in 30-Sidli constituency between BPF candidate Minister Chandan Brahma and UPPL candidate Jayanta Basumatary, who is former ABSU speaker. He is at present a member of the committee for inclusion and exclusion of villages in the BTR formed by the Government of Assam.

The Congress, AIUDF, BJP, AGP and other regional parties have not fielded candidates in these constituencies other than VPI and some independent candidates. The candidates and top leaders of all the political parties are campaigning vigorously for their respective candidates.
