GUWAHATI: BJP president JP Nadda appointed Rangiya MLA Bhabesh Kalita as the State BJP president on Saturday. Kalita will be the 19th president of the State BJP.

BJP's national general secretary Arun Singh made Kalita's appointment known on Saturday.

With the induction of Ranjeet Kumar Dass in his Cabinet by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the party was on the lookout for its State president.

Reacting to his appointment, Bhabesh Kalita said that he would lay stress on strengthening the party. He said that he would go ahead by taking all communities of the State together.

Kalita thanked the party leadership for entrusting him with such an important responsibility.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, his predecessor Sarbananda Sonowal and incumbent party president Ranjeet Kumar Dass congratulated Kalita for his new party assignment. They all expressed their hopes that the party would gain strength under the leadership of Kalita.

He joined the BJP in 1991. Earlier, Bhabesh was a secretary of the State BJP in 2006 and then held the post of general secretary in 2011. He was also a minister in the Sarbananda Sonwoal's Cabinet.

For the first time, he made it to Dispur from the Rangiya constituency on a BJP ticket. He repeated the same feat in 2021 as well, also from the Rangiya constituency.
