GUWAHATI: The State Government has decided to set up more Assam Houses in some metropolitan cities. And one of them will be exclusively for students and patients.

After assuming office, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took this policy decision. It has come to light that several students go to New Delhi for admission and other purposes, so do patients for treatment.

Despite setting up an Assam House and an Assam Bhawan in New Delhi, the accommodations are limited. Students and patients wait for accommodations. And that prompted the Chief Minister to decide to set up an Assam House at Dwarka in New Delhi, exclusively for students and patients.

The Chief Minister has already instructed the GAD (General Administration Department) to start the process. The GAD has taken up the matter with the State PWD for tendering.

A large number of people go to Hyderabad from the state. Taking that in mind, the Chief Minister decided to set up an Assam House there. The State Government has already taken up the issue of land allocation for the proposed Assam House with the Telangana Government.

The State Government has also decided to dismantle the old Assam House building at Russel Street in Kolkata to erect a new one with more accommodation facilities.

There is another Assam Bhawan at Salt Lake in Kolkata.

Talking to The Sentinel, GAD Commissioner-Secretary MS Manivannan said, "The Chief Minister has already instructed us to start the process. We have taken up the matter with the PWD and other authorities concerned for tendering."
