More Rains Forecast In Assam Worries Dispur

GUWAHATI: With the Regional Meteorological Centre, Borjhar predicts incessant rains in Assam in the next 48 hours, Dispur is apprehensive of deterioration of flood situation in the State.

Addressing a press conference at Circuit House here on Sunday afternoon, the Additional Chief Secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management Kumar Sanjay Krishna said since the weather office has predicted more rains there is a possibility of further rise in water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. He said flood might deteriorate in lower Assam districts if rain continues.

“But the State machinery and the administration of all flood affected districts are ready to effectively tackle the flood situation. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is himself monitoring the flood scene. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday assured the chief minister to extend all possible help from the Centre to tackle the natural calamity,” Krishna said.

He said the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat in Jorhat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri. The rivers namely Burhidehing at Khowang in Dibrugarh, Subansiri at Badatighat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Jia Bharali at N.T. Rd.Xing (Sonitpur), Kopili at Kampur in Nagaon and Dharamtul, Puthimari in Kamrup, Beki at Barpeta, Barak at Cachar and Karimganj, Katakhal at Matizuri in Hailakandi and Kushiyara at Karimganj have crossed the danger level of surging water.

According to Krishna about 14,17,411 peopole of 2,217 villages in 80 revenue circles in 25 districts have been hit by the first wave of floods. He said eight people have so far lost their lives in the natural disaster. Presently 62 relief camps and 1722 relief distribution centres are operational in different flood hit districts.

Krishna said the State has adequate funds to provide all necessary relief to flood victims.

Former Chief Election Commissioner Hari Shankar Brahma said that all residents residing in low lying areas should be evacuated immediately to high and safe grounds. He said safety of animals in Kaziranga National Park should also be given the top priority.
