GUWAHATI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Superintendent of Police (SP) of West Karbi Anglong inAssam and the SP of West Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya and sought action-taken reports from them within four weeks in connection with the recent violent incident on the inter-state border at Mukroh.
Meanwhile, shops and markets remained mostly closed in Shillong on Saturday. However, no untoward incident was reported from across Meghalaya on the day.
Some people from Assam and other states, who were stranded in Shillong after a violent protest took place in Shillong recently, came up to Byrnihat in vehicles registered in Meghalaya and then boarded vehicles registered in Assam after crossing the inter-state border there.
Even though the Meghalaya government has assured residents of the state that there is sufficient stock of fuel, numerous panicky vehicle owners thronged the fuel depots of Shillong to fill up their fuel tanks.
It may be mentioned that even though the government of Assam is allowing movement of heavy vehicles into Meghalaya, many apprehensive drivers have parked their vehicles on the roadside and not entered Shillong.
