GUWAHATI: In sync with the National Education Policy-2020, the State Education Department is making a paradigm shift in teachers' 'nomenclature' and 'duty'. Now on the department will recruit only postgraduate candidates as teachers for Class VI-XII.
According to sources in the Education Department, the process of amendment to the service rules of teachers is going on to incorporate that 'henceforth the requisite qualification of school teachers shall be postgraduate, and in all new recruitments, the post of graduate teachers will be non-existent'. The nomenclature of the teachers holding a postgraduate degree and teaching from Class VI to XII will be 'school teacher or secondary school teacher'.
According to sources, the recruitment of such teachers will be under the Directorate of School Education (Secondary), and the teachers will have to teach from Class VI to XII.
"An added grade pay is likely as and when required. A doctoral degree holder teacher will get incentives as grade pay. The existing teachers will have all entitlements they are drawing" one of the sources said.
The department will place the proposed amendment before the Cabinet for its approval.
As per the National Education Policy, 2020, the school education pattern will be 5+3+3+4 against the existing 10+2.
The Directorate of Elementary Education will oversee the Foundation Stage — three years of pre-school education in Classes I and II, as well as the Preparatory Stage — Classes III, IV, and V.
The Directorate of School Education will replace the term Directorate of Secondary Education. It will oversee the Middle Stage, which includes Classes VI, VII, and VIII, and the Secondary Stage, which includes Classes IX, X, XI, and XII.
The NEP-2020 will be effective from the 2022-23 academic sessions.
