GUWAHATI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken up some key projects to boost road connectivity in Assam. These projects are in different stages of planning and execution, said Assam Public Works Department (PWD) sources.

In Assam, projects for infrastructure development of national highways are implemented by the Assam PWD and two Central Government agencies – the NHAI and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). Both the NHAI and NHIDCL are under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

According to sources, NHAI has initiated work to upgrade the existing four-lane NH to a six-lane NH in Guwahati from Jalukbari to Basistha Chariali. This 16.450-km stretch will have four flyovers at Boragaon, Gorchuk, Lokhra and Basistha Chariali, and one vehicular underpass (VUP) at Beharbari.

NHAI is also planning to upgrade the four-lane NH from Basistha Chariali to Jorabat junction to six-lane. This stretch is 8.5 km long. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) of this project is being prepared, said sources.

Another project is the construction of the Guwahati Ring Road. This project titled ‘Northern bypass of Guwahati from Baihata Chariali via Kurua, Chandrapur to Sonapur’ will include a six-lane bridge on the River Brahmaputra. This Ring Road will cover a stretch of 55 km. Sources said that the DPR is being prepared.
