PM meets President-elect after her victory
NEW DELHI: NDA's candidate Draupadi Murmu was elected as the 15th President of India on Thursday, with the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha-cum-Returning Officer for Presidential Election 2022, PC Mody handing over the declaration certificate to the President-elect at her residence in Delhi.
According to latest reports, Murmu got more votes than the quota that was calculated, based on which Mody handed over the declaration certificate to the President-elect.
She got a total of 64% votes. A total of 53 invalid votes were there. Draupadi Murmu got a total of 2,824 votes of the value of 6,76,803 and Yashwant Sinha got a total of 1,877 votes of the value of 3,80,177.
"I heartily congratulate Draupadi Murmu on her victory in the Presidential Election 2022. I hope — indeed, every Indian hopes — that as the 15th President of India, she functions as the Custodian of the Constitution without fear or favour. I join my fellow countrymen in extending best wishes to her" said Yashwant Sinha who is backed by the Opposition parties.
The counting of votes for the Presidential poll started on Thursday at the Parliament House in the national capital.
Murmu and Sinha were pitted against each other in the contest. It emerged that votes were clearly stacked in Murmu's favour.
Keeping in view the support extended by various parties, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Murmu had a clear edge over the Opposition's Sinha.
Voting for the Presidential polls concluded on Monday (July 18) with over 99 per cent of voting.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday evening met President-elect Draupadi Murmu after her victory in the Presidential poll.
The Prime Minister reached Murmu's residence at Umashankar Dikshit Marg and congratulated her.
BJP chief J.P. Nadda was also present at their meeting which lasted around 20 minutes.
Several Union Ministers and BJP leaders also reached Murmu's residence to congratulate her. (IANS)
