GUWAHATI: Taking the increased role of colleges under the NEP-2020 into account, the State Government has decided to set up ten government model colleges in different areas of the state with a project cost of Rs 322.75 crore. The government has decided to set up the colleges on the outskirts of district headquarters.

According to sources in the Education Department, the government has planned the colleges as part of the NESIDS (North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme) of the Ministry of DoNER. The government has already identified the spots for the colleges. They are Mariani in the Jorhat district, Kaliabor in the Nagaon district, Dholai in the Cachar district, Lakhimpur in the Cachar district, Kalaigaon in the Udalguri district, Panbari in the Chirang district, Nayar Alga in the Dhubri district, Merapani in the Golaghat district, Dergaon in the Golaghat district, and one in the West Karbi Anglong district.

The State Government has entrusted the PWD with the construction of the colleges. The PWD has already issued tenders for the construction. The construction will be in EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) mode in 26 months.
