GUWAHATI: The North East Space Application Centre (NESAC) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will conduct a joint study on diverting the water of the Brahmaputra to the 5902 sq km wetlands in Assam during the monsoon. A special meeting held on Saturday at the NESAC in Shillong with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the chair took this decision.

The Union Home Minister inaugurated the NESAC at Shillong on Saturday.

After the meeting, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "The joint study by NESAC and ISRO on diverting the water of the Brahmaputra to 5902 sq km wetlands in Assam will immensely benefit the State. We are proposing a pilot project involving the Central Water Commission, Jal Shakti and the State Water Resources Department in this study."

At the meeting, the Assam Chief Minister also suggested monitoring forests along the inter-state borders using space technology. "The NESAC and the ISRO will identify over 5,000 sq km wetlands to divert Brahmaputra water to control floods in the State," Sarma said.

In the run-up to the last Assam Assembly election campaign, Union Home Minister Amit Shah did drop a broad hint of taking up such a project to make Assam free from floods.
