GUWAHATI: Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has clarified that the State Government will not provincialize any more venture schools that do not fall under the purview of the school provincialization Act.

The minister said this following reaction to the government's decision on school provincialization from various quarters. The AASU (All Assam Students Union) urged the government to reconsider its decision on school provincialization.

Talking to the media, Pegu said, "The issue of school provincialization has created some misunderstanding among various quarters. We have already provincialized the schools within the purview of the school provincialization Act. According to our knowledge, the state has no more venture schools within the ambit of the school provincialization Act. If we have left one or two schools falling within the ambit of the Act, we are ready to provincialize them. The government is also not in any mood to amend the school provincialization Act."

The minister said, "The school-population ratio in the state is quite comfortable. The state has around 46,000 lower primary schools against around 26,000 villages. Some villages have two or three lower primary schools. The state has around 1,000 high schools with less than 100 students each. According to the Central government guidelines, a high school should have at least 200 students to get grants from the Centre. Our thrust is on quality education."

Meanwhile, the minister launched two Apps in the SEBA (Board of Secondary Education, Assam) office – one for a spoken English course from Class VI onward and the other for the issuance of duplicate mark sheets and certificates. Students needing such duplicate documents can get them online by entering their roll numbers and dates of birth on the relevant App. This App will serve students who passed HSLC examinations from 2016 onward.
