GUWAHATI: The winter is slowly setting in the north-eastern States. It will be colder in the region than the last year's winter.

An official at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Borjhar said that there is a possibility of experiencing a harsh winter by the people of the North East. He also stated that the day and night temperatures will be much lower than the last year's figures.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature in Guwahati was 30 degree Celsius followed by 28.6 degree Celsius in Dibrugarh, 29.3 in Tezpur, 28.9 in Silchar, 26.4 in Dhubri, 28.1 in Jorhat. The maximum temperature in Shillong was 21.1 degree Celsius and minimum 0.5 degree Celsius. In Sohra, the maximum temperature was 24.6 degree Celsius. Heavy fog or mist has already started occurred in many places and the night visibility is becoming poorer.

"The temperatures in all places of the North East will further decrease from November to the last part of January in 2021," the official said.

The India Meteorological Department predicted last month that winter this year will be colder due to the 'La Nina' conditions. 'La Nina' is a climate pattern that describes the cooling of the Pacific waters while 'El Nino' is characterised by unusually warm ocean temperatures. Both the factors can have impact on the Indian monsoon as well winter. For example, El Nino is associated with drought or weak monsoon while La Nina is associated with strong monsoon and above-average rains and colder winters.

"The North East may also have an impact of the 'La Nina' conditions," said the RMC official.
