GUWAHATI: Temperature in the north-eastern part of the country continued to soar above the normal temperature during this season. The region is reeling under an intense heat wave along with several other parts of the country.

West Bengal and Tripura have announced the closure of schools due to this heat wave. Assam has, however, not taken any such decision yet.

The temperature in Guwahati touched a maximum of 37.7 degrees on Monday, which is 6.5 degrees more than the normal temperature. It reached 36.9 degrees on Sunday, which was 5.7 degrees more than the normal temperature during this time of the year. Similarly, Shillong, Imphal and Agartala have also seen a deviation of 4.9 degrees, 6.4 degrees and 5.1 degrees respectively, said Dr Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Deputy Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati.

The rise in temperature is being attributed to the lack of rain. Although isolated thunderstorms are being predicted across multiple places in the north-eastern region towards the end of the week, any major change in the condition in Guwahati is not likely.

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sharma urged people to be cautious. “Dehydration is the main problem in this heat. Everyone should take ample amounts of water and juices as a part of their diet. Traditional juices and coolers will also go a long way in preventing any adverse health conditions due to dehydration. Also, include Vitamin C in your diet to prevent any infection. Children should not be allowed to run or play during the noon, they can do the same in the afternoon when the weather is relatively cooler. In case of any diarrhoea-like conditions, people should immediately consult the doctor.”
