NRC: CAPF (Central Armed Police Force) To Shield 300 Police Stations

GUWAHATI: With just 17 days left for publication of the final NRC (National Register of Citizesn) slated on August 31, the Assam government is ensuring that no lapses are left on the security front especially in the run-up to the publication and also in the post-publication phase. The State Home and Political Department along with the Assam Police have already drawn up the security blueprint. The State government has identified 14 districts as sensitive, and has also moved the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for additional CAPF (Central Armed Police Force) personnel. Most of the sensitive districts are spread over Barak Valley, lower Assam and Middle Assam.

Security has been tightened in approximately 300 police stations and the 2,500 NRC sewa kendras across the State.

Sources in the Home and Political Department told The Sentinel that 145 additional companies of CAPF have been requisitioned. Of them, 90 companies will be posted for NRC duties while the remaining 55 companies will be required of maintenance of normal law and order across the State. At present, there are 164 companies of CAPF in Assam.

The requisitioned number of CAPF companies this time is much higher than the number that was positioned in the State during the publication of the Complete Draft NRC on July 30, 2018. During that time, there were 209 companies of the CAPF in Assam.

“Sufficient security measures were taken on July 30, 2018, and this time too the government is preparing the foolproof security bandobast,” A top source in the Home and Political Department said.
