GUWAHATI: In a significant move, State NRC (National Register of Citizens) Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma requested the FT (Foreigners Tribunal) members not to rely on NRC-related documents while disposing of FT cases.

The NRC Coordinator wrote a letter in this regard to all FT members of the state.

The State NRC Coordinator felt it necessary to write a letter to the FT members. He observed that FT members call for various NRC-related documents from the district registrars of citizens' registration while disposing of FT cases.

In this regard, the State NRC Coordinator told the FT members in no uncertain terms that "…the final NRC is yet to be published by the Registrar General of Citizens' Registration, which is mandatory as per Clause 7 of the Schedule of the Citizenship Rules, 2003. And that, as per Clause 4(3) of the Schedule of the Citizenship Rules, 2003, the LRCR (Local Registrar of Citizens Registration) may cause verification of names of persons if considered necessary before the publication of the final NRC. As such, the final NRC and supplementary list may change till the final NRC is published."

With this letter, the State NRC Coordinator has made it crystal clear before the FT members that they cannot treat the already published NRC as evidence for disposal of FT cases under any 'judicial or quasi-judicial process.

The State NRC Coordinator mentioned in an IA (interlocutory application) filed before the Supreme Court of India that "there are a large number of errors due to wrong data entry and erroneous process adopted in the NRC update".
