TINSUKIA: In yet another setback, the OIL (Oil India Limited) failed in its second attempt to cap the blazing oil well-5 at Baghjan after the 'Athey Wagon' developed a technical snag which led to removal of the BOP (Blow Out Preventer) stack from the well head. The OIL will make the third attempt in a day or two before exploring other options.

The OIL in a statement said that while the BOP stack alignment job was underway to insert studs, one of the two bull lines connected with the Athey Wagon which was lifting the BOP stack came out from the socket due to impact of excessive heat.

On the condition of anonymity, a technical expert said that the Baghjan-5 being a problematic well, it would be difficult to control the flow at the surface level even if the BOP is successfully placed on the well head. The only option is to create a relief well nearby. However, this exercise would take another month as drilling has to be carried out both vertically to the same depth and then horizontally before perforation, the expert opined.
