Orange alert issued in Assam; heavy rainfall predicted

 Brahmaputra flowing above danger level at Neamatighat

GUWAHATI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati has issued an orange alert for Assam. A special weather bulletin released by RMC today said that a continuation of heavy rainfall activity has been forecast in Assam for the next 2-3 days.

The bulletin stated that yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over south Bihar and the neighbourhood now lies over north Bangladesh at 0.9 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft roughly along Lat. 90°E to the north of 25°N between 1.5 km and 2.1 km above mean sea level. The monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Amritsar, Karnal, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Bhagalpur, Malda and thence eastwards towards Manipur. Moisture incursion due to strong low-level southerly/southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India is very likely to continue for the next 2-3 days. Under its influence, fairly widespread/widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall / thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to continue over Assam during the next 2-3 days.

In another bulletin by the weather forecast agency today, it said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in six districts of Assam from August 7 to August 9. These six districts are Kokrajhar, Chirang, Barpeta, Dima Hasao, Karimganj and Cachar districts.

Orange alert means to be prepared. An orange alert is issued when extremely bad weather is expected which might cause a disruption to transport, rail, road, and air.

On the other hand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, north Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Sikkim and over Northeast India during the next three days. Subdued rainfall activity is expected over the remaining parts of the country during next one week. In a bulletin released by the weather forecast agency, it said that Northeast India is expected to witness light to moderate, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall. This will include isolated instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura over the next two days, followed by isolated heavy rainfall for the subsequent three days.

Meanwhile, although the flood situation in the State has improved, the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger level at Neamatighat in the Jorhat district today. According to the evening report of Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level of the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat today was 86.15 m. The danger level at Neamatighat is 85.54 m. On the other hand, the Brahmaputra is on a rising trend in Guwahati. Today, the water level of the river in Guwahati was 48.34 m while the danger level is 49.68 m. The Brahmaputra is on a rising trend at Neamatighat, Goalpara, Tezpur and Dhubri. Only in Dibrugarh the water level of the river is steady.
