SILCHAR: Various social and cultural organizations of the Barak valley have expressed their outrage over the indiscriminate vandalism carried out by miscreants across the puja pandals of Bangladesh on the day of Mahashtmi on the alleged pretext that the holy Quran was placed at the feet of Lord Hanuman. The social media and newspaper reports on it have gone viral. The rumour spread like wildfire and the puja committee brought under cloud demanded an independent investigation to pinpoint the truth.

The miscreants acted more on rumour than fact and as the social media showed they went on a rampage not only damaging and demolishing the pandals in urban and rural areas but also desecrated the Durga idols. There was no law and order and the government machinery including police was seen taking a back seat. The panicked Hindus shut themselves indoors and watched helplessly until the Bangladesh Government deployed BGB in 22 districts.

But by then, 3 persons were killed and several injured in clashes. It was a travesty of turn of events that 43 persons were taken into custody at the initial stage. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina acted tough and decisively only after being jolted by External Affairs Ministry and the situation was brought under control. But the Hindus are worried at the thought of another spark being made ready by radical and fanatic elements. Kamalika Dey Purkayastha has rightly drawn the attention of the Geneva-based Human Rights Commission.
