GUWAHATI: The ACMS (Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha) has urged the State Government to pay 20 per cent bonus to the workers of the ATCL (Assam Tea Company Ltd) gardens. The State Government has already asked the tea managements to pay bonus to their workers. And the process of paying bonus to garden workers is going on.

Talking to The Sentinel, ACMS general secretary Rupesh Gowala said, "The Government of Assam has asked the tea associations through a letter to pay bonus to the tea garden workers before the Durga Puja. Around half of the gardens have paid 20 per cent bonus, and the remaining half of the gardens have also agreed to pay 20 per cent bonus. Some of the gardens want to pay the bonus in two installments."

Gowala said, "ATCL also have many workers who should also get 20 per cent bonus. We hope the government will ensure 20 per cent bonus to the ATCL workers before the Durga Puja."

ATCL has 15 gardens with around 15,000 workers. The government recently decided to lease out 12 of the 15 gardens, leading to the floating of tenders. Since the government has not yet leased out any of the ATCL gardens as yet, it will have to pay this year's bonus to the workers.

The maximum range of bonus of a tea estate employee is 20 per cent of annual earnings.
