Permission for movement of cattle goes online in Assam

Portal launched to check illegal cattle transportation and for better monitoring

GUWAHATI: The permission for inter-state transportation of cattle has gone online now. Now on, traders willing to transport cattle to and from Assam for dairy purposes only will have to apply for it online. The move is to check illegal cattle trading and ensure a potent vigil against the smuggling of cattle.

The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, has some strict provisions to check illegal transportation of cattle. The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department today introduced the online permission system for the transportation of cattle. The department feels that the measure it has adopted will make the Act more potent.

Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora launched the online portal, ahvd-cattletrans.assam.gov.in, in the presence of senior officials of the department, including Principal Secretary Manish Thakur and Director Indira Kalita.

Speaking to The Sentinel after the launch of the portal, Minister Atul Bora said, "The permission system for cattle transportation for dairy purposes was in offline mode till yesterday. Our department has developed a web portal for interstate cattle transportation. It has gone live as of today. From now on, the department will not receive any offline applications for the transportation of cattle. The twin purposes of the portal are to check illegal transportation of cattle and to put in place a better monitoring mechanism so as to make legal transportation of cattle a hassle-free affair. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid stress on the development of the dairy industry. This portal will be of immense benefit to those who run the dairy industry legally. They will not have to go to the offices for permission. The department will provide them their permission online after examination of the relevant documents."

Bora further said, "This online permission for transportation of cattle is valid only for dairy, not for beef. No permission is needed for the inter-district movement of cattle, barring the districts that share international borders. If anybody wants to transport cattle to the districts sharing international borders, they have to seek permission online through the portal."
