PMAY-G: Assam takes more time than national average

GUWAHATI: Assam takes more time to complete a house under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) than the national average. Assam takes 359 days to complete a PMAY-G house on average against the national average of 268 days.

Information received from the Union Ministry of Rural Development makes this fact clear. Assam completed 2,29,740 PMAY-G houses from 2016-17 to 2018-19 in phase I of the scheme. In PMAY-G phase II, the state completed 2,22,813 houses from 2019-20 to 2021-22.

Neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh took 162 days to complete a PMAY-G house on average. It is a far better performance than the national average, let alone Assam.

Barring Arunachal Pradesh, none of the other seven states in the region has maintained the national average in completing PMAY-G houses. While Manipur takes 451 days on average to complete a PMAY-G house, Meghalaya takes 469 days, Nagaland takes 418 days, Mizoram takes 335 days, Tripura takes 351 days, and Sikkim takes 331 days. The other states that fared better than Assam in the PMAY-G are Bihar, Chattishgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Telengana, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab etc. A P&RD official said, "The framework for implementation of PMAY-G seeks completion of a house under the scheme in 12 months from the date of sanctioning. Going by that yardstick, we complete a house in less than a year on average. We could have reduced the average number of days for the construction of houses under PMAY-G had there been no problems like that of Corona, floods, etc in the past two years. The houses under phase-II of the scheme are taking less time.""
