GUWAHATI: Those at the helm of affairs in the state police force have alerted the police stations to stay away from illegal means as they are under constant vigil.

Such a warning from the higher-ups came close on the heels of police personnel caught red-handed while accepting bribes. Even yesterday, sleuths of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (V&AC) Cell caught the SI of Kachua Police Station in the Nagaon district red-handed while taking money for facilitating 'bail matters'.

According to official sources, the warning to the police stations reads, "A close watch is being kept on personal integrity alongside a professional performance at all levels. Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Cell has been watching undesirable contacts and middlemen being employed/used by SsP/ASP/DSP/SDPO/OcC/SI. Please, be extremely careful. It would be extremely painful to lay a trap against a senior police officer. The transfer may not be restored each time. Similar is the message for the highest level in the government. Hope, the signal is understood..."

Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Cell arrested around 40 government employees, including police officials, in the past month. Chief Minister Himanta |Biswa Sarma said, "With our war against corruption, such practices have come down, but not stopped. We will keep waging our war till we root out corruption. I appeal to the public to agree to pay bribes if an official demands so. However, inform the police while paying bribes."
