POLICING IN ASSAM: Crime rate falls; case disposal goes up in one year

GUWAHATI: From May 2021 to April 2022, the police in the State decreased in the crime rate and increased in the number of case disposal.

Special DGP LR Bishnoi, ADGP (CID) AYV Krishna and IGP (Vigilance and Anti-corruption) Surendra Kumar jointly addressed the media today on the performance of the state police force in the past year.

On the crime scene in the state, ADGP Krishna said, "In May last year, the average crime rate per lakh population in the state was 384 that came down to 222 in April 2022. The average monthly case registration was around 11,000 last year. It came down to around 6,200 in April this year."

Krishna said, "This is possible because we laid stress on case investigation, perfect charge sheets and quick disposal of cases. We disposed of 24,159 cases in the first quarter of 2021. On the contrary, we disposded of 28,400 cases in the corresponding period in 2022."

"The other big achievement is the war against drugs, cattle smuggling, Burmese supari smuggling, human trafficking etc. In the past year, we seized drugs worth Rs 548 crore, registered 2,834 drug-related cases and arrested 4,838 people. We also seized 320 vehicles used in drug transportation during the period," Krishna said. He added, "We seized 53 lakh kg Burmese supari, registered 163 cases and arrested 182 people in that connection."

Krishna further said, "Our fight against cattle smuggling continues. We rescued 9,454 cattle from smugglers and arrested 992 smugglers, besides registering 1,100 cases in the past year."

Krishna said, "The CID successfully recovered up to 33 per cent of the defrauded amounts. Assam is among the top five states in the country concerning the percentage of recovery of defrauded cyber fraud amounts."

IGP (Vigilance and Anti-corruption) Surendra Kumar said, "We registered 24 corruption cases against 29 people, including 28 public servants and one broker, in the past year. We did trap corrupt officials based on public complaints. We appeal to the public to lodge complaints against corrupt practices."

Special DGP Bishnoi said, "The President of India presents the 'President Colour Award' based on the performance in the past 24 years of a state police force. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will present this prestigious award to the Assam Police force on May 10."

IGP Lachit Baruah of the Special Branch said, "Many militants surrendered and suspended their operations in the past year. We successfully checked the jihadi modules in the state and arrested 16 jihadis. We are keeping a close vigil on some sensitive areas. The government has rehabilitated 4,203 surrendered NDFB cadres and 1,926 surrendered Karbi militants. Around 30 militant organizations were active in the state a few years back. Only the ULFA-I and the KLO are active in the state now."
