GUWAHATI: On the formation of a commission to look into the concept of ‘one nation, one election’, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the policy, if materialized, would cut election-related costs to a great extent, boosting the development of the nation and making India ‘Vishwaguru’.

Earlier in the day today, the Central Government formed a commission with former President of India Ramnath Kovind to look into the possibilities of introducing the ‘one nation, one election’ concept.

Hailing the decision of the Central Government, the Chief Minister said, “Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a landmark decision by appointing a commission to look after the issue of ‘one nation, one election’. I’m glad and very happy that a person of the stature of Ramnath Kovindji has taken the decision or has accepted the offer of the Prime Minister. Now this commission will definitely look after the issue of ‘one nation, one election’ because multiple elections involve lots of money and because every time India is in election mode, development suffers a lot. Every time there is an election, either a panchayat or urban body election or an Assembly or Lok Sabha election, India’s development suffers for that. Prime Minister Modiji has correctly realized it, and he is advocating that ‘one nation, one election’ will take India to a different level. Expenditure will be reduced, development will continue throughout the five years, and our country will be the Vishwaguru if we can proceed in that way. So, I think the commission is a gift to the nation by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Amrit Kaal, and I hope that according to the recommendation of the commission, the Parliament and the Prime Minister will take appropriate decisions.”

He further said, “On behalf of the people of Assam, I would like to compliment the Hon’ble Prime Minister for taking a bold step towards He further said, “On behalf of the people of Assam, I would like to compliment the Hon’ble Prime Minister for taking a bold step towards the ‘one nation, one election’ policy. I also like to congratulate and offer my best wishes to Sri Ramnath Kovindji for his new assignment”.
