GUWAHATI: The problem of a corona-infected person doesn't end at getting cured of the viral attack. Since COVID-19 damages lungs and other organs badly, post-COVID complicacies take toll more than what COVID does. As of now, the death toll in the State due to COVID-19 and post-COVID complicacies is around 1,000.

Worried over the deteriorating corona situation in the State, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "The situation is going from bad to worse. We've very limited scope for medication. People are not yet serious on the pandemic. Compared to COVID positive cases in August, there has been a rise of 1.5 per cent corona positive cases in September. Now post-COVID complicacies are taking their toll. A COVID patient getting cured of the viral attack is not the end of his/her problem. Since COVID affects the lungs and other organs badly, post-COVID complicacies take the lives of many who have been released after their recovery. As of now, COVID toll in the State is 330, and if the post-COVID toll is added to it, it will be around 1,000.

"The Gauhati High Court has expressed concern over the situation, and asked the deputy commissioners and the superintendents of police to be strict in executing corona protocols. We're going to obey the directive of the High Court word by word. Taking the situation in view, we need to be harsher. As per instructions from the Government of India, we can't impose full lockdown now. In such a situation, only options left with us to control the situation are strict adherence to the use of face masks and maintaining social distancing.

"In the past few days, on an average 3,000 COVID positive cases were detected daily. If the detection of corona positive cases maintains this pace, in September alone the total corona tally in the State will be 90,000. And that will be disastrous for the State. We, therefore, need to lay stress on awareness campaign. Now our target is to keep the daily corona tally below 3,000."
