GUWAHATI: Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that the post-COVID complications among patients have emerged as another health danger.

Sarma told reporters here on Saturday afternoon that he has come across several cases where patients after recovering from COVID-19 infections were hospitalized for other complications. He said many symptomatic corona patients are complaining of severe weakness for two months after being discharged from hospitals.

Expressing concern over holding of election rallies in the BTAD (Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District) areas amidst the pandemic peak, Sarma said that the district administration, political leaders and parties must try to minimize such events. He added that if the people in large number come out to celebrate the coming Durga Puja in October, there will be an unprecedented surge in COVID-positive cases in November and December.

"Mere making and enforcing rules will not work unless the people themselves become aware of the dangerous virus and take precautions. The number of positive cases might cross 2 lakh within this month. The death rate is also increasing in the State," Sarma pointed out. The Kamrup (Metropolitan) district has so far recorded the highest number of deaths (90) followed by 63 in Dibrugarh. There has been no COVID casualty in Biswanath Chariali, Dima Hasao and South Salmara districts.

On Thursday, Sarma had sounded the alarm bell saying that management of COVID-19 would not be possible in case the present trend of virus infection continues till December in the State.
