Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban: 21% of sanctioned houses completed in Assam

GUWAHATI: The Mission Directorate, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Urban Assam completed nearly 21 per cent of the sanctioned houses in the state in the past five years till January 2022.

Since 2016, the Mission Directorate completed 28,813 of the 1,37,845 sanctioned houses. According to official sources, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs sanctioned 11,161 houses in 2016-17; 44,735 in 2017-18; 3,354 in 2018-19; 48,458 in 2019-20 and 20,137 in 2020-21 for Assam.

The Mission Directorate completed 66 houses in 2016-17; 381 in 2017-18; 13,847 in 2018-19; 3,953 in 2019-20 and 10,566 in 2020-21 till January.

The Prime Minister launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban in 2015 with an intent to provide housing for all urban areas by 2022. Since the Mission Directorate completed only 20.9 per cent of the sanctioned houses, the completion of 79 per cent of houses in the remaining two months is a big question.

The Pradhan Manti Awas Yojana – Urban is under implementation in 99 cities in Assam. The Directorate has not completed a single house Golokganj, Jagiroad, Baithalangshu and Langhin. In Doomdooma, the Directorate completed only one house. It completed 1,199 houses in Guwahati in five years.

The financial progress of this flagship programme is – the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs released Rs 982.86 crore of the Rs 2088.67 crore sanctioned for the state in the past five years.

When asked about the delay in the construction of houses under the scheme, official sources said that the Covid-19, the Assembly election, etc., delayed the works. They, however, said that the works would pick up pace now.
