Pre-monsoon floods claim one more life in Goalpara district

GUWAHATI: One more person died in the floods in Goalpara district on Thursday, taking the toll to two in the same district. Amidst the COVID-19 surge, heavy and incessant rain since Tuesday has affected more than 2,94,170 people in 300 villages of 15 Revenue Circles across nine of Assam's 33 districts.

The daily bulletin of Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has said that of the nine districts, the highest number of affected population is in Goalpara (2,01,347) followed by Hojai (36,064), Nagaon (27,691), Nalbari (10,076), Dibrugarh (7,897), West Karbi Anglong (6,623), Tinsukia (4,037), Dhemaji (420), and Darrang (15 persons).

While most of the rivers are in spate, the Brahmaputra and the Kopili are flowing above the danger marks in Neamatighat in Jorhat, and Kampur in Nagaon districts respectively.

During the pre-monsoon first spate of flood, 15, 977 people are taking shelter at 80 relief camps across the distircts of Goalpara (56), Hojai (21), and Tinsukia (three).

Erosion has been reported from the districts of Barpeta, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Majuli, Sonitpur, South Salmara, and Udalguri. Embankments have been damaged in the districts of Baska, Hojai, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Karimganj.

The floods have so far damaged crops in 21,572.30 hectares.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna in his visit to Hojai district took stock of the flood affected areas and relief measures undertaken by the district administration.
