GUWAHATI: A plot to disturb the poll process by assassinating top leaders including a Minister has been unearthed by the State Police.

Based on a telephonic conversation, Crime Branch Guwahati and Dispur Police arrested pro-talk ULFA leader Pradeep Gogoi from Hatigaon on Monday night in this regard. Meanwhile, two other persons who were on the call with Gogoi — Manab Pathak and Ketu Mudi — were also arrested from Karbi Anglong the same night. Manab Pathak serves the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) as a market supervisor while Ketu Mudi is his associate.

The Crime Branch has registered a 'Suo Moto' case — 06/2021 u/s 120 (B)/121/121(A)/ 122 r/w 18 of UPA.

Police sources informed that the trio and some other persons were allegedly conspiring to assassinate State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and some other political leaders. They were planning to use firearms and explosives to instill terror in the minds of the people of Assam during the Assembly polls, added the sources.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told media here on Tuesday, "The State DGP (Director General of Police) has asked me to remain alert."
