GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has directed the Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, to probe the allegations of misappropriation of funds under the 'Directorate of Char Areas Development, either by himself or by a committee constituted by him.
A PIL (48/2021) was filed in the Gauhati High Court by an NGO, Amguri Naba Nirman Samity regarding allegations of corruption, siphoning of funds and financial irregularities, relating to development funds meant for sar areas under the Directorate of Char Areas Development, Government of Assam. The NGO had filed the PIL based on information received through the Right to Information Act, 2005.
The court disposed of the PIL and directed the Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam "to consider the representations submitted by the petitioner and other individuals relating to the allegation of misappropriation of funds relating to the Directorate of Char Areas Development, Government of Assam, based on the materials so submitted and to dispose of the same, following law, after giving an opportunity of hearing to the petitioner bypassing a speaking order. It is also made clear that while constituting the committee, care must be taken to ensure that the officials, who are members of the committee, are not the ones against whom allegations gave been made. The aforesaid exercise shall be undertaken by the respondent authorities as expeditiously as possible, preferable within 12 weeks from the date of receipt of a certified copy on this order".
