GUWAHATI: The State Directorate of Secondary Education has started departmental proceedings against secondary school teachers who have been working as LIC (Life Insurance Corporation) agents.

The Director of Secondary Education has sent confidential letters to 11 secondary school teachers – nine of the Baksa district and two of the Kamrup district – who work as LIC agents.

The development came close on the heels of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asking the authorities concerned to identify the teachers working as LIC agents and take action against them.

The entire issue stemmed from the poor performance in the HSLC (High School Leaving Certificate) examination-2022 by 102 government schools in the state whose pass percentage was 10 per cent or below. The pass percentage of 25 of the 102 secondary schools in the state was zero.
