GUWAHATI: The State government has set the target to raise ten commando battalions in its five-year term, in phases. And the Home Department has already initiated the process for setting up five of the ten battalions in phase 1.

The twin objectives of creating the commando battalions are guarding the state and generating employment avenues.

Following instructions from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also holds the Home portfolio, the Home Department has already readied files for the proposed five commando battalions.

According to official sources, if everything goes as planned, the department may publish an advertisement inviting candidates for the proposed five battalions by the end of 2021. Since the department has to start everything from scratch – interview, selection of candidates, training and whatnot – the five battalions may come up by the end of 2023.

The personnel of the proposed battalions will have training in the line of the commandos of NSG (National Security Guard), SPG (Special Protection Group), Cobra and the like. The training alone takes a year.

The battalions, once raised, will not only help in law-and-order incidents but will also play a crucial role in counter-insurgency operations.

The department will set up the battalions at strategic locations. Each commando battalion will have a strength of 1,200 cadres.
